Many, if not all of the professional engineering societies sponsor competitions, often aimed at engineering students, to get engineers into the laboratory or shop to apply classroom knowledge to engineering projects with a tangible product in the end. In the early 1990s, as a Master of Science student at the George Washington University, Paul, the principal of Blue Specter, led a group of undergraduate engineering students to compete in the SAE Mini-Baja All Terrain Vehicle competition.
